Sometimes when I tell a fellow Canadian, "This dog was rescued from a shelter.", they are confused. A shelter in Canada may be where a homeless dog can go to be rescued. This isn't the case in many US shelters. They can be very different from SPCA's and humane societies in Canada. Many American shelters are county run (local gov't funded), overcrowded, and diseases spread freely* ...think of it more like death row.

* The Penny Foundation takes great care to ensure all dogs we find homes for
receive proper veterinary care, prior to adoption. *

And unfortunately, reports of animal abuse by shelter employees have been
increasing.

*Please visit the following links with discretion. Descriptions, photos, and videos not appropriate for all ages.*

Fortunately, there are hundreds of rescue groups in every state that pull dogs, cats, horses, pigs, bunnies, birds, reptiles, etc from the shelters before they are destroyed and find them loving homes. Please visit our Links page for a list of some of these organizations.

If you can provide a loving home Click Here to view our available dogs. If you do not find love at first sight please email a Penny Foundation Matchmaker and they will help find a dog that is a good match for you!

Note: All our dogs are in foster care. (Please see our Foster & Volunteer page to read why foster homes are so important.) Unfortunately, we are not open during business hours like a physical shelter for you to come and visit. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we will need to setup a time for you to meet, usually in the evenings when our foster parents are home from work. So please be patient with us. Thank you.
