FROM QUARANTINE TO QUALITY TIME - MOLLY'S STORY
Alone in the quarantine area at the City of San Bernardino Animal Control shelter, Molly sat itching, alone and unhappy. With no vet on staff, the shelter staff told The Penny Foundation Founder, Alexis Adams, that this little four-month-old German Shepherd girl had mange. For a dog in a shelter, a condition like mange might as well be a death sentence. Molly was “unadoptable.”
That’s not what Alexis saw, though. She saw a sweet dog in need of some love and medical care. Molly was pulled from the shelter and went home with her for a few days. In quarantine, Molly was kept away from people and dogs that she so longed to play with. And because one form of mange can be contagious to both people and other dogs, she had to be kept separated in Alexis' home, which includes 3 dogs. All Molly wanted was to play! Once she was on Canadian soil, Molly was taken to Dr. Sekhon at the Angel Animal Hospital in Surrey, B.C. Dr. Sekhon is the organizations trusted vet and he had some good news for Molly. The mange was not contagious. It's cause; severe malnutrition but luckily for Molly, all she had to do was eat a good healthy diet and one shot each week for 6 weeks to take care of her problem. But Dr. Sekhon also found two bilateral hernias also stemming from her malnutrition. The hernias had to wait to be fixed when Molly is spayed, which will be done once she’s healthy enough for surgery and her skin condition is under control. The hernias didn't slow Molly down. She could now be a puppy again. Play, sleep in the bed, & curl up for cuddle time.
Even with her medical issues, it wasn’t hard to find Molly a home. An eager family was ready and willing to adopt Molly. They were so eager to give this little girl a home they were willing to take her in right away and treat her itchiness and give post-op care after surgery in a few weeks after spay & hernia repair.
Molly has gone from a lonely quarantine cell to living with a family that loves her unconditionally. She’s even got a new best friend – 7 year old, Chris. Grant, Chris' dad. gushed about the new addition to his family.
“Molly is an absolute DOLL!!! Already she has brought soo much joy to our family. She is clearly very intelligent. I’ve started her basic training. This week we are working on Come & Sit. She’s learning almost instantly. After doing tons of reading and research on what an ideal German Shepherd pup should be like, I’ve realized that her temperament is exactly what it should be. Curious, affectionate, confident, no signs of fearfulness or aggression. Perfect!”
There are millions of dogs just like Molly in shelters all over North America. Please Adopt, Don’t Shop!
